Method
How it works
Words are sequences of letters, digits and apostrophes, so hyphenated terms count as one word and stray punctuation is ignored. Sentences are detected at ., !, ? and line breaks, with common abbreviations handled to avoid inflated counts.
Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by blank lines. Character counts are shown both with and without spaces because social platforms and databases often measure them differently.
Keyword density is the count of a word divided by total words, ignoring common stop words. It is a rough editing signal, not an SEO target to chase.
FAQ
Before you ask
Specific to word counter, including limits and privacy.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
No. Counting happens in the browser as you type. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged.
How does the tool count a hyphenated word?
It counts as one word. That matches how most word processors report counts, though X (Twitter) counts some characters differently.
What reading speed is used?
200 words per minute for silent reading and 130 words per minute for speaking aloud, based on common average figures for adults.
Can I use it for academic word limits?
Yes, but check your institution's rules — some exclude references, captions or headings from the limit, and this tool counts every word you paste.
Privacy
All counting is client-side. Your text is never sent to our servers.
Read the privacy policy for data retention, analytics and contact details.
Limits
Results depend on the input you provide and your browser. Always sanity-check important numbers before publishing or billing.
