Example

What it looks like

Service invoice with 18% GST
Input
GST-exclusive amount ₹10,000 at 18%
Output
Taxable value ₹10,000 · GST ₹1,800 · Total ₹11,800 (CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900)

For inter-state supplies, the same ₹1,800 is usually shown as IGST instead.

Method

How it works

For exclusive amounts the GST is simple multiplication: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100. The total is amount + GST.

For inclusive amounts the base must be extracted, because the amount already contains tax. Taxable value = amount × 100 ÷ (100 + rate), and GST = amount − taxable value.

The calculator splits the GST into CGST and SGST for display because intra-state invoices usually show two equal components. Intra-state versus inter-state is a legal classification we do not determine — confirm the correct treatment with your accountant.

FAQ

Before you ask

Specific to gst calculator, including limits and privacy.

Is the GST rate always 18%?

No. Rates vary by goods or service and change with government notifications. Enter your own rate if it differs from the presets, and verify against the current official schedule.

What is the difference between inclusive and exclusive GST?

Exclusive means GST is added on top of your price. Inclusive means the price you quote already contains the GST, so the tax has to be extracted from it.

Does this check my GSTIN?

No. The tool only does arithmetic. It does not validate GSTINs, filing status or compliance requirements, and nothing is filed on your behalf.

How do I round GST?

Tax amounts are often rounded to the nearest rupee on invoices. This calculator shows two decimal places; apply your own rounding rule and keep it consistent.

Privacy

Amounts are calculated in your browser and never stored.

Limits

This calculator is an arithmetic aid only. GST rates, place of supply and compliance rules are set by law — verify with a qualified professional before invoicing or filing.
